For those of you who didn’t know; my best friend, Vick, was brutally hit by a car two weeks ago and is in pretty bad shape. Right after it happened there was a pretty good chance he would die but, so far, he has pulled through. He hasn’t really fully woken up since it happened and nobody’s been able to find out if he’s really 100% there. It just makes me sick, thinking of him laying there unable to move a muscle. Shit like this hits you heavy but you can’t let it affect you too much. All anyone can do now is wait. He’s a bad ass and I know within a year’s time we’ll all be sitting around drinking a beer talking about how crazy that shit was, but for now it’s hard to see someone who doesn’t deserve any pain and suffering like that.

…are some of the most pretentious people in the art world. Took me a while to see it but it’s really just a bunch of dicks boasting about frequencies they can barely hear a difference in.

You’re really going to stop listening to an amazing band because their album sounds too over-compressed to your ears? Is it an audiophile sin to actually get a rush out of listening to your favorite song out of a shitty set of $10 novelty speakers?

What’s next? Going to a live show with amazing energy and having a shit time because the front of house engineer didn’t get a decent mix?

Yes, there’s a science to audio but please, don’t forget that the your jobs are to make music sound the best it can, not to circlejerk about how lacking the song is in the 17-20kHz range. You give an amazing guitar a shitty sounding guitar and they’ll make art. That’s what it’s all about. Don’t get caught up on technicalities. You’ll end up looking like a dick.

A hipster has zero to do with the way you look or what music you listen to or what mode of transportation you choose. Calling someone a hipster because of the way they dress seems ridiculous to me. A hipster, to me, is someone who lacks complete originality and tries to pass off trying too hard as art. Dress how you want to dress. Listen to whatever makes your ears happy. Just stop trying to do the same exact shit everyone’s doing right now and call yourself an artist. There’s a fine line between being inspired and being a mimic.

This really sucks. It happens way to often to some of the nicest bands around right now. This is some of the lowest kind of thievery there is. These guys aren’t loaded with cash. They’re regular people who are touring around in a van, trying to share their music with people. I hope these fuckers get caught.

Here’s my entry for the Circa Survive Remix contest. It’s technically the first remix I’ve ever actually finished so it’s an accomplishment for me. I’m pretty terrible at remixing songs since it’s hard to break away from what the original song was. I decided to change the key, the melody and the tempo of the song to try to force myself to make something different than the original. The biggest challenge by far was getting the timing on the vocals right. All the vocal treatment was done in Melodyne. The track was created and mixed in Logic Pro and I used a lot of Kontakt instruments along with Native Instrument’s Massive and some reverbs from Lexicon. I hope you guys enjoy it. Feedback is something I love as there is always room for improvement. Download will be available shortly after the contest winner is decided.

I’ve always had a problem with doubting everything I ever work on. Lately I’ve stopped doing that so much and just kept pushing everything I work on forward. I’m no genius. Everything I work on isn’t going to sound great. I’ve come to terms with that. I’ve experienced this on a different level a long time ago. Back then it was accepting how I looked in the mirror. Then I came to terms with being who I was born as. I was 14 then and now at 20 years old the term ‘self-conscious’ only applies to my creative world. Hopefully a few years from now I’ll be able to write about how the word ‘self-conscious’ doesn’t exist in my vocabulary. Maybe then I’ll actually start releasing my music to the public someday.

My MobileMe subscription ran out a few weeks back so I had to switch over to a free alternative for a while for my portfolio website. I’ve got an interview with my college’s career development team so I figured I should have it back up and running for them to analyze. I kind of like the new site over the older one although the simplicity of the original was awesome. Feel free to check it out as I will be updating it more frequently and hopefully uploading some tutorials for all sorts of things eventually.

The Rapture: Greatest Marketing Scheme in Christian History

I’m pretty sure that this whole ‘end of the world’ thing FamilyRadio.com has pushed for the past few months is a total marketing scheme. Tuning into their online radio delivers, well, a christian radio broadcast. Not one bit of talk about the world ending today at 6 PM. Nothing about how the end times are near. Nothing but a guy talking about how to help incorporate god into your marriage. What?

Not to mention right after his segment he reminded his listeners to tune in NEXT weekend for another one of his segments. Maybe they have a radio station already setup in heaven for them with DJ Jeezus. Really, though, if you tell everyone the world is ending, people will take note and I can almost guarantee that they’ve had more listeners on this day than they’ve had all year.

How do you get an non-believer to listen to your broadcasts?

Tell them the world is ending.

They won’t listen because they’re afraid. They’ll listen because they want to hear the reactions of everyone when nothing happens come 6 PM. But in the end, you’re still listening to the station, aren’t you?

Yep, we all just gave FamilyRadio.com the best ratings they’ve had all year and a whole lot of exposure. Oh, and don’t think that just because the rapture won’t happen today that all their credibility will go down the drain. They tried this in 1994 and failed (obviously) and still they saw a huge rise in listeners even after that incident. Let’s hope a second failure will prove to be different.

Just got picked up as the composer/sound designer for this Portal 2 Mod and I’m pretty excited. This one looks like it’ll be a lot of fun and I’ll be able to really experiment with stuff whereas I’m somewhat limited in what I’m doing in Plagued. Not that doing sounds for Plagued isn’t fun. If you’re a Portal fan, keep your eye out for this mod. It’s going to be great.
